Configure Did Not Answer responses in modern reports

By default, "Did not answer" responses are excluded from your report, but you can choose to include them.

Prerequisites:

Open the modern report.

"Did not answer" is a system generated response that is recorded when either:

  • An optional choice question is presented to respondents, and they choose not to answer it. This happens when the Response required checkbox is deselected by the survey author.
  • A grid question requires participants to answer less questions than the total number authored. For example, the survey author includes three statements but only requires the respondent to answer two of them in the Require participants to answer drop-down list.

When "Did not answer" responses are excluded:

  • "Did not answer" responses are subtracted from crosstab totals, and percentages are calculated based on this adjusted total.
  • Totals and percentages for "Did not answer" responses are not displayed in any crosstabs or charts.
  • The "Did not answer" option is not listed for any of the questions in the editor on the Banners page.
  • "Did not answer" responses are not included in shared reports or exports.

Excluding "Did not answer" responses is the default behavior.

When you choose to include "Did not answer" responses:

  • "Did not answer" responses are included in crosstab totals, and percentages are calculated based on this total.
  • Any crosstab rows or columns with non-zero values for "Did not answer" responses are displayed.
  • You have option to show or hide banners for any of the questions in the editor on the Banners page.
  • "Did not answer" responses are included in shared reports or exports.

The "Did not answer" option is available when you create both recodes and filters regardless of whether you choose to include or exclude "Did not answer" responses in your report.

On the report toolbar, click Settings and select the Include "Did Not Answer" checkbox.

"Didn't assign a rank" responses to Rank Order questions are treated the same way as "Did not answer" responses, and their inclusion or exclusion in the report is also controlled by the Include "Did Not Answer" checkbox.
