Randomize or rotate answers, columns, or rows

Limit response bias by presenting answers in a different order to each participant.

Depending on the question type, you can randomize or rotate answers, columns, or rows.

The randomize/rotate property has three options:
  • Authored order keeps the answer order as it was created. The answer order is the same for all participants.
  • Random order changes the order of the answers each time the question is displayed to participants.
  • Rotated order selects a random answer then rotates the answers above it to the bottom of the list (for example, a,b,c,d,e becomes c,d,e,a,b). The survey maintains the rotated order if the participant navigates back to the question.
  • For Choice questions:
    1. In the Edit Pane, from the Show answers in list, select either Random order or Rotated order.
    2. Optional: To lock the position of a specific answer, click Options, and select Pin answer.
  • For Grid questions:
    1. To randomize/rotate the columns, from the Show columns in list, select either Random order or Rotated order.
    2. To randomize/rotate the rows, from the Show rows in list, select either Random order or Rotated order.
    3. Optional: To lock the position of a column or row, click Options, and select Pin column or Pin row.
  • For Rank Order questions:
    1. In the Edit Pane, from the Show items in list, select either Random order or Rotated order.
