Pipe answers into question or answer text

Include participants' previous answers in a subsequent question or answer text.

Note:
  • Pipes are variables, and they will reflect each participant's information.
  • You cannot pipe answers from the following question types:
    • Single Choice Grid
    • Multiple Choice Grid
    • Allocation
    • Highlighter

You can pipe these variables into the following locations:

  • The Question text field.
  • The Answer text field.
  • The Instruction text field.
  • The Row text field.
  • The Column text field.
  • The End Survey message and URL.
Note: Using the batch editor to modify text that is referenced in another question will affect your survey logic. For more information, see Add answers in a batch.
  1. In the text field, click to place your cursor where you want to insert the pipe.
    Result: The formatting toolbar appears.
  2. Click Add a pipe.
    Note: Pipes are also available in the Batch Editor. For more information, see Add answers in a batch.
  3. In the Pipe dialog, from the Sources list, select This Survey.
  4. From the Question or Variable list, select the answer text you want to pipe into your question.
    Note: You cannot pipe text between two questions on the same page. For more information, see Create a Page in your survey.
  5. Click OK.
A placeholder for the piped text is added.
Note: No answer value will be displayed when you preview the question. To see how your pipe will appear to participants, test your survey.
