Create a recode

Create a recode to group responses to a question.

Example

You ask members to answer a question on a five-point satisfaction scale (Agree Completely, Agree Somewhat, Neither Agree nor Disagree, Disagree Somewhat, Disagree Completely). Then you create a recode to group the Agree Completely and Agree Somewhat answers together. You can use the recoded answers in your reports.

Note:
  • If you create a recode that contains references to other recodes, you cannot drag the recode to or from the library because it is too large.
  • It is recommended that recodes are created before the survey is live or after responses are collected. However, you can still create a recode after a survey is closed.
  • Recodes are up-to-date in reporting regardless of whether the recode was created when the survey is live or closed.
  • Depending on the number of responses collected, syncing can take from a few minutes to hours. Ensure all recode data is synced before reporting or using the questions in filters or weighting actions.
  • Nested recodes (that is, recoding a value created using a recode) are not recommended because they could lead to an exponential increase in the amount of data to be calculated and result in degraded performance or calculated values not being created.
  1. In Power Survey Authoring, click the Questionnaire tab.
  2. At the bottom of the Questionnaire tree, click References and Recodes.
Result: The References and Recodes tree appears.
  3. In the References and Recodes tree, right-click the survey name, and then select Add Recode.
  4. In the New Recode dialog, type a name for the recode, and then click OK.
Result: The new question appears in the tree.
  5. To open the Filter Editor, click the Filter button.
  6. Set up the filter.
  7. Optional: To create another filter, click Answer.
Note: A recode can contain a maximum of 100 filters.
  8. Set the recode properties.
    1. Click Properties.
    2. In the Title field, enter a heading that will appear on reports instead of the question name.
    3. Set the Question type.
      • Select Single Choice when the participant can choose only one answer option.
      • Select Multi Choice when the participant can choose more than one answer option.
Note: A participant is only counted once in your reports when the Question type property is set to Single Choice, regardless of whether they qualify for more than one option. For more information, see Troubleshooting exports.
  9. Repeat steps 4 to 6 for each answer option.
