Recode example

This example shows how to group answers to a five-point scalar question ("top box low box"), and then use this in a topline report.

Step 1: Create a Single Choice question

  1. In Power Survey Authoring, click the Questionnaire tab.
  2. Create a single choice question and name it "satisfaction".
  3. Click Answer Text.

  4. From the Answer sets list, select 5 pt Satisfaction, and then click OK.

    The 5 pt Satisfaction answer set is added to your question.

  5. Click Save to save your survey.

Step 2: Create a recode

  1. Click References and Recodes.

  2. Right-click the survey name, and then click Add Recode.

  3. In the New Recode dialog, type satisfaction_recode in the Enter a new name field, and click OK.

The satisfaction_recode appears in the References and Recodes tree and the first answer is created.

Step 3: Create a filter

  1. Click the Filter button next to answer 1.

    The Condition Builder appears.

  2. In the Quick Select list, right-click the satisfaction question, and select Add.

    The satisfaction question is added to the Question Pane.

Step 4: Group the answers

Next you will use a filter to create the following answer groups:
  • Satisfied
  • Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied
  • Dissatisfied

Step 1: Create an answer group named "Satisfied "

Before you begin, ensure you have completed Step 3: Create a filter.

  1. Click the Include tab.
  2. Click the Gear icon. and select Add Condition

    Tip: To delete a filter, click the Gear icon and select Delete.
  3. Change filter operator to Is One Of.

  4. Set the filter to include the answers Very Satisfied and Somewhat Satisfied.

  5. Click Save to close the Condition Builder.
  6. Click Edit, type Satisfied in the text field, and then click Update.

Step 2: Create an answer group named "Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied"

  1. Click Answer and type Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied in the Enter the text for this new answer field.

  2. Click Filter.

  3. In the Quick Select list, right-click the satisfaction question, and select Add.

    The satisfaction question is added to the Question Pane.

  4. Click the Include tab.
  5. Click the Gear icon. and select Add Condition

  6. Change filter operator to Is One Of.

  7. Set the filter to include the answer Neither Satisfied nor Dissatisfied.

  8. Click Save to close the Condition Builder.

Step 3: Create an answer group named "Dissatisfied"

  1. Click Answer and type Dissatisfied in the Enter the text for this new answer field.

  2. Click Filter.

  3. In the Quick Select list, right-click the satisfaction question, and select Add.

    The satisfaction question is added to the Question Pane.

  4. Click the Include tab.
  5. Click the Gear icon. and select Add Condition

  6. Change filter operator to Is One Of.

  7. Set the filter to include the answers Somewhat Dissatisfied and Very Dissatisfied.

  8. Click Save to close the Condition Builder.

Step 4: Save and validate your survey

  1. Click Save to save your survey.

  2. Click Validate, to validate your survey and fix any errors.

Step 5: View the recode in a topline report

Save and validate your survey before creating a new topline report.

  1. Click the Reports tab.
    Note: The survey must be validated before the Reports tab is available.
  2. In the New report list, select Topline, and then click Create.
  3. In the Report Name field, type Satisfaction, and click OK.
  4. In the Viewing Format list, select On Screen.

  5. Click View.

The responses to the question are grouped into the three answers that you created from the original five-point scale:

  • Satisfied
  • Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied
  • Dissatisfied
