Smart Grouping other/specify and NPS® follow-up responses

Automatically group similar responses to other/specify answers and NPS follow-up questions to understand the main topics and their frequency.

Prerequisites:

Open the modern report.

Note: Smart Grouping is not available by default in existing reports created before the feature release date (October 28, 2025). If you add new data tiles for supported question types or Text profile variables to an existing report, the Smart Grouping feature is available.

The following field types are supported:

Survey Questions
  • Single Choice
  • Multiple choice
  • Net Promoter Score℠1 (Follow-up Responses)
  1. In the upper-right corner of a Single Choice or Multiple Choice question tile that includes one or more other/specify answer, click the options menu and select Tile Settings.

A question includes an other/specify answer when the Make answer other/specify option is selected for an answer when you build your survey.

  2. Do one of the following:
    1. For other/specify answers, click the Crosstabs tab, and under Smart Grouping, select the checkbox next to each other/specify answer you want to enable Smart Grouping for.
    2. For NPS follow-up responses, click the Net Promoter Score tab, and under Smart Grouping select the Feedback checkbox.
  3. Optional: In the Grouping Language drop-down list, select the language to use to name the groups in the output.
Smart Grouping can group answers that use a single language or multiple different languages. The identified groups are output in the single language you select.
  4. Click Apply.
Result: The selected other/specify answers are analyzed and a new crosstab is created listing the identified groups and the count and percentage values for each group.
  5. Optional: If you refresh your report and additional responses are included, click Regenerate Grouping to run the Smart Grouping process again and update the groups and counts in the Smart Grouping crosstab.
