Create a Rank Order question

Ask participants to order a list of items based on a specific attribute, characteristic, or preference.

  1. From the Survey Builder Toolbox, under Questions, do one of the following:
    • Drag the Rank Order question to the Table of Contents.
    • Click the Rank Order question.
  2. In the Table of Contents, click the Rank Order question.
    Result: The Edit Pane appears.
  3. Optional: Edit the Question name.

    Question names:

    • Should be unique.
    • Can contain symbols and all alphanumeric characters.
    • Are not displayed to participants.
  4. Optional: Add an image to a question.
  5. In the Question text field, enter the question text.
    Note: The recommended character limit is 2500.
  6. In the Items fields, enter the items you want to rank.
  7. Add another item by clicking Add.
    Tip:
    • To create a line break within an item, type Shift+Enter if you are on a PC, or Shift+Return if you are on a Mac.
    • To create a new item, type Enter if you are on a PC, or Return if you are on a Mac.
    • To enter multiple values at the same time, click Add Items in Batch. For more information, see Add answers in a batch.
  8. Optional: Add an image to an item.
    1. Click Add Image.
      Note: The maximum file size is 2 MB.
    2. In the Assets Library, select the image or upload a new one.
    3. In the Alternative text field, type a description of the image that can be understood by text-only readers.
    4. Click Select.
  9. Move an item by doing one of the following:
    • Grab the item using the Drag handle on the left side of the item, and move it up or down.
    • Click Options at the right side of the item, and select Move up or Move down.
  10. Optional: Remove an item by clicking Delete.
  11. Set the number of items you want participants to rank by selecting one of the following from the Number of items to Ranks list:
    • All
    • The specific number of items you want participants to rank.
    For example, you may want to ask participants to rank their top three movies out of a list of 10.
    Note: By default, participants must rank all the items.

  13. Optional: To preview the question in desktop or mobile view, in the Edit Pane, click Preview.
    Result: A preview of your survey appears, starting with the selected question.
    Note: Preview in mobile view simulates the mobile experience. For best results, preview your question on a mobile device.
