Create a new activity link

Invite ad hoc participants to complete an activity. You can create multiple survey links for a single survey, and track participation rates for each link separately.

Activity links gather data anonymously. Members and nonmembers alike can complete the survey through a live activity link multiple times. On the back end, each response received through an activity link is stored as a response from a new anonymous nonmember. There is no way to connect an activity link response to a member, unless you append an identity variable to the activity link.

  1. Open a survey and click the Distribute tab.
  2. On the left menu, click Links > New Link
  3. In the Create New Link dialog, type an internal name for the link.
  4. Select a community from the Assign to a Community list.
This step applies only if you have multiple communities.
Note: Surveys must contain a translation for the assigned Community's locale. If the translation is not present, you can create a distribution, but you cannot send it or make the activity live. For more information, see Manage locales.
  5. In the Member Facing Activity Name field, type the activity name participants will see.

The member-facing activity name is visible to any participants who use this activity link.

This field cannot be empty. If you do not provide a value, the application will use the last member-facing activity name that was provided in the same language. If this value does not exist, the application will use the internal activity name.

You can change the member-facing activity name at any time while the activity link is open. The updated member-facing activity name is visible to any participants who start the activity after the change is saved. However, participants who have already started the activity under the old name will still see the old name.

  6. Click Create.
Each activity link has a test and live version. You can also create a custom version.
    Link Description
Test Link Use test links to preview your activity before the live link is open to participants. You can use the test link yourself or share it with collaborators.
Live Link Use Live Links when you distribute the survey.
Note: Only Power Users and Author users that have the Can schedule distributions permission enabled for their user account, and Admins, can generate live links. Otherwise, the Generate Live Link button is disabled.
Custom Link Use Custom Links to:
    • Create shorter live links that look nicer and are easier to share.
    • Create meaningful links that reflect the nature of the activity.
    • Create links that reflect your brand.
  7. Optional: Append a member's identity profile variable to an activity link.
Tip: Perform this step when you want to record a participant's email address or unique ID from an external system to tie the response back to an existing member.
  8. Select the theme associated with the activity link.
    1. Click Back.
    2. Select the theme from the Theme menu.
By default, the theme is set to the active theme.
    3. Optional: To see what the activity looks like with the selected theme, click the link; on the Link page, in the Test Link area, click Open Link.
Result: The test link opens in a new browser tab and displays the selected theme.
    Note:
    • Theme selection is unavailable for power surveys, which still use Sparq 1 skinning.
    • The selected theme is only visible to participants who use this link to complete the activity. The same activity can have multiple links, each one with a different theme.
    • The selected theme does not affect the appearance of Community portals (which use the active community theme)member hubs.
  9. Optional: Get a test activity link.
  10. Optional: Get a live activity link.
  11. Optional: Get a custom activity link.
  12. Optional: Generate a QR code.
Note: Generating QR codes for custom links, or links that contain identity variables, is not supported.
