Create a Zip / Postal Code question

Ask participants to provide a post code.

Note: Use a Short Answer question instead of a Zip / Postal Code question if you need to collect:
  • Postal codes from countries other than Canada or the US.
  • Postal codes that start with 0.

Note:
  • This question type validates the format of the US Zip Code or Canadian Postal Code. It does not verify that the zip code or postal code is a valid value.
  • Canadian postal codes are stored in the database with a space between the third and fourth characters, regardless of the format the participant used at the time they answered the question (for example, A1A 1A1). When creating a condition based on a Canadian postal code, use a space between the third and fourth characters or the condition will fail. For more information, see Skip or display questions.
  1. From the Survey Builder Toolbox, under Questions, do one of the following:
    • Drag the Zip / Postal Code question to the Table of Contents.
    • Click the Zip / Postal Code question.
  2. In the Table of Contents, click the Zip / Postal Code question.
    Result: The Edit Pane appears.
  3. Optional: Edit the Question name.

    Question names:

    • Should be unique.
    • Can contain symbols and all alphanumeric characters.
    • Are not displayed to participants.
  4. In the Question text field, enter the question text.
    Note: The recommended character limit is 2500.
  5. From the Region field, select one of the following validation options:
    Option Description
    USA Zip code

    Response must be in a valid US ZIP Code format. Hyphens are supported in the case of plus-four or add-on codes. For example:

    • 12345
    Canada - Postal Code

    Response must be a valid Canadian postal code format. A space after the third character is supported but not required. For example:

    • A1A 1A1
    • A1A1A1
  6. Optional: Once you have authored your question, you can also:
  7. Optional: Select Treat response as sensitive data.

    This option controls whether the application purges personally identifiable information collected through this question, for members who have become inactive. System variables such as FirstName, LastName, and email are flagged as sensitive data by default. For more information, see Sensitive data.

    Note: Admins can change this setting. To change this setting as a Power User or an Author, you must have Can access sensitive data enabled.
  8. Optional: To preview the question in desktop or mobile view, in the Edit Pane, click Preview.
    Result: A preview of your survey appears, starting with the selected question.
    Note: Preview in mobile view simulates the mobile experience. For best results, preview your question on a mobile device.
