Create a Rating question

Ask participants to select a rating from a visual scale of stars, hearts or thumbs. Use a Rating question if you need a fun and engaging way to ask participants to rate something.

Note: This question type is available in modern view only.

Sample modern view:

  1. In the Survey Builder Toolbox, under Questions, do one of the following:
    • Drag the Rating question to the Table of Contents.
    • Click the Rating question.
  2. In the Table of Contents, click the Rating question.
    Result: The Edit Pane appears.
  3. Optional: Edit the Question name.

    Question names:

    • Should be unique.
    • Can contain symbols and all alphanumeric characters.
    • Are not displayed to participants.
  4. In the Question text field, enter the question text.
    Note: The recommended character limit is 2500.
  5. From the Shape list, select an option:
    • Stars
    • Hearts
    • Thumbs
  6. From the Scale list, select an option between 2 and 10.
    This option controls how many stars, hearts, or thumbs are shown to participants. By default, each icon corresponds to a number on the scale from 1 to 10. These numbers are used to display Rating question data in reporting.
    Note: If you want to change the numeric values assigned to each rating, you can use scalar values in Analytics to do so.
  7. Optional: Once you have authored your question, you can also:
  8. Optional: To preview the question in desktop or mobile view, in the Edit Pane, click Preview.
    Result: A preview of your survey appears, starting with the selected question.
    Note: Preview in mobile view simulates the mobile experience. For best results, preview your question on a mobile device.
Tip: Need to append and pass through a Rating answer value in a URL? Here's how:
  1. Type the question name (QuestionName).
  2. Type an equal sign (=).
  3. Type the scale number.
  4. Type a space. (This will be converted to %20.)
  5. Type the shape name (star, heart, or thumb). This value can be singular or plural depending on the scale number.

    This value also varies depending on the survey language. To check for the correct value, click the Report tab and open the standard report. On the report toolbar, click Filter. Add a filter condition using the Rating question from the survey, and then check the array of answer values.

    Example

    In Spanish, heart and hearts would be corazón and corazones, respectively.
