Create a group in your survey

Place a series of questions in a group and manage their survey logic together, to make completing your survey easier for participants.

Tip: Do you use power surveys for even distribution? You can use random distribution in survey groups to achieve similar results, without having to rely on scripting. For more information, see these topics:
  1. From the Survey Builder Toolbox, under Survey Actions, do one of the following:
    • Drag the Group action to the Table of Contents.
    • Click the Group action.
  2. Optional: Edit the Group name.
    1. In the Table of Contents, click Group.
      Result: The Edit Pane appears.
    2. In the Group name field, rename the group.
      Your group name:
      • Should be unique.
      • Can contain alphanumeric characters and symbols.
      • Is not displayed to participants.
      Note: The maximum number of characters is 100.
  3. Optional: Add a Description (maximum 2500 characters).
    The description is not visible to participants, but it is useful for annotating the group's contents. Descriptions are also displayed for groups that have been saved to the Template Library.
  4. Optional: Turn on the Apply Least Filled Concept toggle.
    This setting helps ensure even distribution if you are using the group to organize and test concepts. For more information, see Least Filled concept testing.
  5. Optional: In the Display objects in list, select the question order by clicking one of the following:
    • Authored order displays the questions in the order your questions appear in the Table of Contents.
    • Random order changes the order of the questions each time the group is displayed to participants.
    • Rotated order rotates the questions each time the group is displayed to participants. Each time the group is displayed, the first question is randomly selected to begin the rotation order. Then, the subsequent questions appear in the order designed in your survey.
    Note:
    • Rotated order does not guarantee an exactly equal distribution. Rotated order rotates questions randomly for each participant. Therefore, the next participant may or may not get the same starting question. What's more, if some participants skip the question that's shown, this can cause certain questions in the group to be rotated and displayed more often to subsequent participants.

    • To prevent validation errors, do not randomize or rotate survey objects when:

      • The group contains an End Survey action.
      • You create a Survey Logic condition based on a question in the same group.
      • You are piping answer text between two pages in the same group.
  6. Optional: In the Number of objects to display list, select the number of parent-level survey objects that you want each participant to see.
    Note:
    • You must set the question order to Random order or Rotated order before you can select the number of survey objects to display.
    • Set Value actions do not count as parent-level survey objects.
    • To prevent errors in your survey logic or structure, test your survey.
    Example
    The following image shows a group named Pizza that contains a total of three parent-level survey objects:
    • The page named Pizza Style.
    • The page named Takeout.
    • The group named Dining Out.

    When the Number of objects to display is set to 1, each participant will see one of the three parent-level survey objects.

  7. Close the Edit Pane by clicking the group name in the Table of Contents, or click Close.
  8. Add questions to the group by doing one of the following:
    • In the Survey Toolbox, under Questions, drag a question type onto top of the nested group name in the Table of Contents.
    • With the group highlighted in to Table of Contents, click a question type in the Survey Toolbox.
    • Add an existing question in the Table of Contents by dragging it on top of the group name.
    Result: The question name appears indented below the group name.
  9. Optional: Collapse the group in the Table of Contents by clicking the arrow on the left side of the group name.
  10. Optional: Delete a group.
    • In the Table of Contents, right-click the group name and select Remove, and then click Remove in the dialog that appears.
    • In the Edit Pane, click More, and select Delete.
    Result: The group and all the questions contained in it are removed from your survey.
